Steve Jobs has long wage a war against Adobe Flash in favor of HTML5. Apple products by default do not support Flash, and there is not flash support in Apple iOS products.

HTML5 has advantages and some disadvantages as against Adobe Flash. Both technologies are likely to co-exist for several years to come. One advantage of HTML5 is the ability to render web pages which provide functionality equivalent to an app installed on the device. 

Using HTML5 technology, Amazon launched its Kindle Cloud Reader, which provides offline and online access to e-books through a web browser. The Web based e-reader is available at amazon.com/cloudreader. No downloading or installation required. Cloud Reader will automatically sync with other Kindle apps, allowing you to start reading on your PC, and continue where you left off from a iPhone, iPad or Kindle.
 
At this point, Kindle Cloud Reader works with Safari on the iPad and desktop and Googles Chrome.

 

Amazon took this approach because to avoid the 30% Apple takes from apps and ebook purchases through iPhone apps.  So it looks like the technology that Steve Jobs push so hard is going to cut into profits from Apple app sales.

According to Bloomberg , that equates to about 25 iPhones per retail store, who is also enhancing their existing website as part of an initiative to catch up to number one home improvement retailer Home Depot. "Next month, Lowes will introduce its MyLowes online tool that customers will be able to use to store owners manuals, warranties and paint formulas," Chief Information Officer Mike Brown explained in an interview with Bloomberg.

Heres a simple guide on how to set a custom ringtone to your message alerts on your Samsung Galaxy S II. If youll notice that you cant find an option to set what you desired music or tone to set it as a message notification alert.

Heres how to do it:

Connect your Samsung Galaxy S II to your computer or laptop and select "connection type" and get access to storage memory card. If you are having trouble on connection see the guide here.
Now after you have successfully connected you galaxy S II, browse to your mass storage then find the folder "Notifications", if its not on there, create a new folder and named it "Notifications".

Then grab a copy music files you wanted from your computer into that newly created folder "notifications". Once finishes, disconnect your Galaxy S II from the computer. Then you can set that music files as your message tone.

- Go back to the idle screen. Press the Home key.
- Then open the application list.
- Select Messaging.
- Then press on the Menu android-menu-key key.
- Then tap on Settings.
- Tap on the Notifications checkbox and ensure that the checkbox is checked.
- Tap on Select ringtone.
- On the popup select the ringtone you desire.

Readers Hub Newspapers

The Galaxy S2 includes Samsungs Hubs, which includes four Hubs - Social, Readers, Music and Game Hubs. I have decided to use them all (or at least the ones thats available in South Afirca (Grrr at Music Hub)), and let you know what I experience for each one.

Ive decided to start with the Readers Hub. It consists out of three sections, namely News, Magazines and Books.

Tapping on the News section, opens up the news reader part of the Readers Hub. At the top we have three options, namely My Library (containing everything youve purchased), Store and Settings. This screen shot is on the Store tab, and here is a list of all the countries, and next to the name the number of publications that country has to offer through this app. See South Africa has 23 - not too shabby :) Also, another nice thing is you get 7 free credits to try out the feature :D

Tapping on the country, will take you to the list of newspapers available there:

I used on of my free credits especially for this blog so that I can show you how it works (Im nice hey? :) - I got the "Beeld" newspaper - todays (18 August 2011) copy:

You can see in the above screen shot, that you can have the one youre buying be delivered automatically, and you can add it to your favourites. Quite nice features :)

After selecting the paper to get, it started downloading:

After the download was done, I tapped on the Newspaper, and got this welcome screen with some instructions and tips on how to read the paper:

Pretty straightforward as you can see. I had a quick scan through the paper, and found it very easy to navigate and read the articles.

That covers the Newspaper part of the Readers Hub that comes standard with the Galaxy S2. I must admit, I was a bit skeptical at first, I usually dont like the "default" apps that come with phones, but this one Im really impressed with.

To get a new Newspaper to read is a quick and painless exercise. Now, I havent bought one yet (downloaded the one in this post with one of my free credits), but as soon as I do, Ill amend this post with how that went...

Guide on How to Install a leaked Honeycomb on HTC flyer

From a news month ago that HTC spokesperson has confirmed the Honeycomb upgrade for HTC flyer will be made available as soon as possible after it releases. Its been little while ago since that report claimed. But now, you might probably already know, The Beta version of the Honeycomb for HTC Flyer has leaked a few days ago. Advance users already tested the said ROM even its been somewhat very complicated to install. The process reportedly tested and works on a Euro WWE 32 GB 3G Flyer and may also work with other variants but unconfirmly works well so far.

Heres a few screenshoots just for a brief details of what have we got to the the HTC Flyer Honeycomb update.

Important Things Needs to Consider Before Following this Guide:
* This process is recommended for experts only!
* This guide is only tested on a Euro WWE 32GB 3G Flyer - it may work on other configurations, but this is untested (id advise reading the topic to see if anyone has experimented with your configuration!)
* Anything you do from this point forward is at your own risk - my Flyer works and ive resurrected a couple of others, but I take no responsibility if it all goes horribly wrong. You COULD brick your tablet
* Do NOT under any circumstances run the RUU in its entirety nor fastboot flash rom.zip - this will make irreversible changes that you dont want!

Dual Sim Droid Lenovo A60

There is a lot to like about the new Lenovo A60. The Lenovo A60 is a entry Android powered phone running. But is as good as a budget phone can get. First, A60 costs Php7,700. At that price you would not expect too much. But that is not the case with the A60. It could have been priced 50% more and it would still have been considered reasonably priced.

The A60 runs Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread making it a current phone and up to date phone. It is not a 2010 model or early 2011 being flogged on the Philippine market.  You wont be seeing newer Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich phones for two or three months yet, and you wont be seeing them at the A60s price point for a very long time.

Second, the A60 has a 3.5-inch screen which is a pretty good size, being the same size as the screen even on the latest Apple iPhone 4S, and it has a decent 320 x 480 screen resolution which is the same as 3.5-inch screen phones more phone that cost twice as much  like the Apple iPhone 3GS or the Samsung Galaxy Ace. Yup, it is capacitative and supports multi-touch 

Third it is a dual SIM phone. Yup, it supports to SIM cards. It is the first phone from a "major" manufacturer that supports dual SIM cards. We have to qualify this with the fact that Lenvo is new in the mobile phone business, bit still it is unlikely they would intentionally allow their name to be placed on a poor quality product.  

The phone only comes with a 3.2MP primary camera and a VGA secondary camera, but at this price range you really do not expect anything better. On the processing side, it comes with a 650MHz MT6573 processor, 256MB of RAM and 512MB of ROM with a MicroSD card slow and a 2GB MicroSD card provided. Nothing great, but again on par with other phones in the price range, except for the amount of RAM. These days we would like to see  a bit more RAM.

Going past that it does have HSDPA connectivity, WiFi, GPS, a gravity sensor, proximity sensor, light sensor and FM radio. Inside is a big 1500 mAh battery. So, we are all waiting for the catch. Well, if anything it is that we have never used a phone with the MT6573 processor, but it does seem to be a current enough platform and it does have a graphics processing unit. The other drawback is Lenovo is new in mobile phones. Maybe there is no catch.

But look at is this way, at Php7,700 the phone matches the specifications of its competitors, and it is like Lenovo threw in the larger screen and dual SIM capability for free. So if we were going to take a chance on a unknown quantity, this would be a very good bet.

Game Review Asphalt 6 Adrenaline Part 1

This is going to be my first full review of a big game on my Galaxy S2. If youre also lucky enough to have a Samsung Galaxy S2, then you can download this very awesome title from the Samsung App Market.

It appears to install quickly, but as with most of Gamelofts games, the installation is only the installer for the game. This one is a whopping 563MB download - so take care if youre using your cell networks data connectivity, and get charged as much as we do here in South Africa!

Ok, now to get to the actual game - at the time of writing this post, Asphalt 6 is available for free, and its a full featured title. Here are some screen shots:

Now, you have to admit, these are very awesome looking graphics for a phone! Luckily the Galaxy S2 has the hardware capable of running games like this.

Anyway, I have only played the game for a few races, and this first part of the review will cover what Ive experienced so far.

You start off the game with 3 cars in your garage - a Mini Cooper, Nissan 370Z and a Fiat Abarth, but theres lots more to unlock.

There are several game modes available, and I only played a few normal races so far, will cover the others as soon as Ive done some!

The controls are really easy, and you can customize it as well. You drive the car by tilting the phone in the direction you wish to turn, and with the default control scheme the accelerator is on automatic. If you tap on the screen on the left you brake, and tapping on the right activates your nitro boost.

There are also different camera positions available, which is quite nice.

I was quite surprised to see Cape Town as one of the available tracks, and since I live here, I decided to drive there first :) - I was shocked to see snow, something we never have haha!

Each track has various shortcuts, and there are bonuses you can collect to, for example, recharge your nitros charge.

Anyway, the graphics are really cool, and the Galaxy S2 really handles the game well. The phone does get a bit warmer, cause Im sure pumping out graphics like this is quite hardware intensive!

While racing you can knock-out the other drivers, which gives you a cash bonus at the end of the race, but theyre not out of the race completely though, it just buys you a few more seconds.

To "win" a race, you must place at least 3rd, and with your winnings you can buy new cars, apply decals and upgrade your cars as well - I have only unlocked one car so far, but havent even started with the tuning and so on - will let you know how that goes!

So far Im very impressed, and I see it even has multiplayer, both Local and Online. You also have a career mode, with lots of other cars and bikes you can unlock as you complete races.

The sound is also very cool, and a woman commentator keeps things interested with comments about your driving and close calls, etc.

This is a big game, so Im going to stretch out this review over a few parts - I must admit, I look forward to review it completely - so far Im very impressed! Not only by the game itself, but also by the Galaxy S2s capabilities in running it so smoothly!

Samsung Galaxy S III comes with a PenTile matrix screen comparison

The Samsung Galaxy S III is really all about everything - the marriage of design, software features and processing power, but since you’ll look at the screen all of the time it’s mostly about the screen. The Galaxy S III has got a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 720x1280 pixels. And this alone should already disappoint some of you waiting for a Super AMOLED Plus screen. Let us explain why that’s kind of a letdown.

A Super AMOLED screen is the same as the one on the Galaxy S II Galaxy Nexus and this means that it’s not using the full RGB matrix, but instead goes for the PenTile RGBG pixel arrangement. This means that effectively you get a third less subpixels, hence a slightly worse picture. Samsung obviously relies on the HD resolution of the display and the excellent contrasts of its AMOLED  technology to make up for this, but it’s clearly one area where competitors like LG might take the leading edge and capture geeks hearts.

August 2011 high end smarthpone buyers guide

If you are thinking of buying a smartphone this month, it might be a good time to wait. If you are decided on getting an Android phone, you safely buy the Samsung i9100 Galaxy S II without worrying that something better is just around the corner. It is by far the best Android phone available in the market today.

The Galaxy S IIs 4.3-inch Super AMOLED screen is the best screen on a smartphone today. The Galaxy S IIs thin 8.5 mm makes the massive screen much more manageable than previous large screen Androids. It has the fastest processor and graphics combination in any smartphone today. With 1GB of RAM and 16 or 32 GB of internal storage, it does not fall short in the department either. Its Php29,900 suggested retail price is lower than we expected, and a little comparative shopping and you will be able to snag it for just Php27,800.

The other top end Android are interesting, but outclassed. My own personal favorite is the HTC Sensation. If I was in the market right now this is what I would buy, but at Php27,000 with less RAM, a scant 1GB or internal storage and less processing power and slower graphcis, the Galaxy S II is by far a better deal. Why would I buy it. I like HTCs Sense user interface, and I would like my next phone to be similar to my last phone. 

Gamers may want to look at LGs Optimus 2x.  While it is no Galaxy S II beater, These days, it can be had for as low as Php24,990 which is a fair amount less. Also its Tegra 2 chipset is the most common dual core Android platform in use there days, and Nvidia is supporting the gaming community, so it might provide better gaming compatibility.

If you want an iPhone instead this may be a good time to wait. A new iPhone is expected next month or two. Which means you can get the current iPhone 4 for a much lower price by than or get Apples latest offering. The new A5 chip we expect on the next iPhone will make is substantially faster than the current iPhone 4. Rumor is, it will be getting a larger screen too. The 3.5-inch screen on the iPhone is really starting to feel small in 2011.

Nokia and BlackBerry. Nokia fans are better off looking at Windows Phone 7, that is where the company is heading. BlackBerry users are better off waiting for QNX to come to their phones or buying a BlackBerry Playbook and extend the capabilities of their existing phones.

Windows Phone 7 buyers, may want to wait a bit too. We understand that HTC, LG and Samsung are about to launch a series of Windows Phone 7 Mango phones to head off the iPhone launch. And really, there is no Windows Phone 7 device these days that we would consider to be "high end".

The good thing is this time last year, we would have been looking at 33K to 40K to get the best of the best. The 25K to 28K option we are looking at right now are friendlier to the wallet.
